Ethical Hacking Basic Terms
Ethical hacking
"Ethical Hacking" when I heard this word for the 1st time I completely ignored the word "Ethical" and focused on "Hacking". So, almost all are very interested to know about hacking or I can say password cracking.
So what is Ethical Hacking anyway?
In a general term, I would like to call ethical hacking a process in which a person gets paid for messing up with your stuff online or offline.
wait! wait! we do have a definition for it also!
"It is a process of checking and testing the organization network for the possible loopholes and vulnerabilities. The individuals or experts(of course they are.) who perform ethical hacking are called white hats. They perform hacking in ethical ways without causing any damage to the computer system thereby increasing the security perimeter of an organization."
Hackers !
Most of the individuals think that a hacker is a person who actually knows a lot of coding and decodes every password, but no! it's not completely true.
"They are those intelligent individuals who spend plenty of time exploring various information systems like computers, networks, websites, software applications and mobile applications etc. with the help of hacking knowledge to find out the weakness in their security controls".
Types of Hackers
When I first time attended a seminar on ethical hacking our resource person asked a question that how many types of hackers are there? I being very confident gave an answer saying, "Sir! there are two types of hackers good and bad". For a general view, you can consider a hacker in three categories White Hat, Black Hat, and Grey hat hackers. This is what most of the people also think but you will be more amazed to know that there are many types of hackers. which are:
1. Black Hat Hackers.
Black Hat hackers are those individuals who only are into hacking to steal information to benefit themselves. They are the people who actually got hackers society famous and also built a bad reputation for hackers as a profession
"A black hat hacker is an individual with extensive computer knowledge whose purpose is to breach or bypass internet security."
2. White Hat Hackers.
"White hat hackers are usually seen as hackers who use their skills to benefit society".
They may be reformed black hat hackers or they may simply be well-versed in the methods and techniques used by hackers. An organization can hire these consultants to do tests and implement best practices that make them less vulnerable to malicious hacking attempts in the future.
For the most part, the term is synonymous with "ethical hacker."
3. Gray Hat Hackers.(black + white)
The term "grey hat" (me) refers to a computer hacker or computer security expert who may sometimes violate laws or typical ethical standards but does not have the malicious intent typical of a black hat hacker. The term was derived from the concepts of "white hat" and "black hat" hackers.
4. Hacktivist.
Individuals who aim to bring down critical infrastructure for a cause and are not worried about facing jail terms or any kind of punishments
5. Cyber Terrorist.
Individuals with a wide range of skills, motivated by religious or political beliefs to create fear by large-scale destruction-disruption of computer networks.
6. Govt. Sponsered Hackers.
Individuals employed by the governments to penetrate and gain top secret information and to damage info, systems or other Govts.
